What brand of rifle would be good to get a 7mm mag in? I usually stick with stainless guns. I will be hunting a field with shots at 500 yards for whitetail deer. I am looking at either a Browning or Tikka...

  1. So far, I have owned a Ruger M77, Winchester Model 70, Savage 110, Browning A-Bolt, and a Remington 700 in 7mm Rem Mag.  I would not be afraid to take 300-400yd shots at Whitetail deer with any of them.   My personal favorite is my Remington 700BDL.  You have to decide which rifle fits you the best and if stainless is a must have or not.  If you seriously plan on taking 400-500yd shots, then you had better own a range finder and practice hitting a 10" circle at 500 yards in varying winds.    Anyone who plans on hunting at these ranges should plan on shooting several hundred rounds at paper at long range before you think on ethically hunting live game.   Putting all of your shots in a 1/2" circle at 25 yards, and then a 2" circle at 100 yards should be very simple if you plan on  hitting a 10" circle at 500 yards.   Simulate shooting from your "box stand" when you practice instead of using sand bags or some other type of semi-solid rest.

Remember, a 10MPH wind can deflect a 7mm Rem Mag bullet 16-20 inches or more depending on load at 500 yards.

It goes without saying that a rifle scope up to the task of hunting game at 500 yards can cost near as much as your rifle will.  There are fixed power scopes in the $400 range which may fit the bill if you can live with a fixed power.

  2. Okay first of all you dont hunt whitetail deer at 500 yards! Not even the pros shoot that far- they stick to around 400 and most of the time, less than that!

You can sneak up to a within 200 yards of a whitetail and still have an excellant shot!

Oh, and, Ruger is a good rifle for your price range.

    hope this helps!

  3. Considering that the bullet drops about 40 inches at 500 yards, don't you think that's pushing it some?

  4. 500 yards LOL...remington/ruger/winchester...savag... is best bang for money   400 to 500 dollars

  5. The better and best choice for you is to consider the Savage Model GXP3 with Accu-trigger, mounted with a 3X9 variable scope, and mounted and bore sighted in 7mm Magnum for ONLY $633.00 Dollars...***

  6. I dont know why any gun would vary much from caliber to caliber but the Tikka is a great gun. It cant leave the factory until till it shoot a sub-MOA target. I dont know why you are going to shoot deer at 500 yards but I would say for deer, a 7mm mag is big. A 7mm-08 is just right. It will shoot just as flat and mabye flatter. The only thing is that it will have less knockdown power but it doesnt blow your arm off.
