I can't afford classes so I want to learn from a book. What is the best book out there for learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Last time I saw someone ask this question one guy said to ask his Martial Arts teacher and the other one said to not get a book, just find a dojo. I want to make it clear that I do not have the money to join a dojo.

  1. I mean, BJJ gets a lot of it's effectiveness from the heavy amounts of live and hard sparring, along with effective teaching of the subtle things that make the moves work by experienced teachers, so asking to learn a BJJ, or any other Martial Art from a book is somewhere between stupid and dumb.

If you must get a book, and you're completely inexperienced in the art, grab "BJJ: Theory and Technique" by Royler and Renzo Gracie. It's not the best book in the world, but it goes over all the basics of Brazilian/Gracie Jiu Jitsu, from White to Black belt techniques. You have to understand- almost all of the BJJ books out there that are worth mentioning were written with the intent of being a supplement, not a replacement.

...Then go find a proper BJJ school. Without live training against resisting opponents, MA techniques are useless, especially any sort of grappling ones.

As someone who takes his training seriously, you have to understand how hard it was for me to answer your question seriously without flaming you, so please take everyone advice, and do one of the following: pony up the cash to train, make friends with someone who does and is willing to train you for free, or just don't train it at all.

    *Edit*

I called training via book stupid, not you.

    Trust me. I've tried it.

Best of luck to you in the future, and hopefully you'll catch a break in your life that will allow you to train legitimately.
