Good Breeds For Showjumping?

I know the obvious warmblood and sport horse, but do thoroughbreds also make good jumpers in the junior/amature .9m - 1.2m range?

In comparison to sport horses and warmbloods??

Thanks

  1. I personally like Thoroughbreds. They have the speed and they usually love to jump. My OTTB [[ off track thoroughbred ]] free jumped over 5' ! Also I've seen some great Draft Cross jumpers. So mainly any horse that enjoys work and going fast, likes to jump, and is physically able to is what makes a great jumper. So don't believe people when they say things like "oh my $50,000 warmblood is better than your TB!" h**l my OTTB was $2,500 :D Hope this helps

  2. A well trained TB can and will be competitive against a well trained WB. I compete in SJ with a 12 year old OTTB I'm competitive against warmbloods of all varities. Just because a certain breed is more commonly used or is more expensive doesn't make it better.

I disagree with the first posters list of breeds. While many of those breeds are common in the SJ there are many other breeds in the ring as well. I have seen many welsh, welshX, quarter horses, arabians and even appalossas competeting over large fences. They're competetive as well. Conformation, will, talent and training make a horse good at show jumping, not breed.

  3. Never under estimate large pony/ small horse power! I compete 4' courses aboard Haflingers, and have never looked back! I used to compete on mainly Thoroughbreds, but Haflingers not only have amazing personality and looks, but are athletic, agile, and love jumping. Most have exceptional form too!

I ride the larger, finer boned modern- day Haffies, and look for ones 14.2hh and above. You may want a large horse, but remember Haflingers are broad-backed and take up your leg very well! Good luck with whatever breed you choose, but still remember to look at each horse as an individual in your search.

  4. TB's do make good jumpers mine used to jump 4 feet

  5. any breed is fine but pure breads are probably better

  6. I rode this appaloosa that used to jump over 4 feet. This paint we hope to buy is also a good jumper.

Any horse that wants to jump, can jump.

It depends on conformation, if they actually like it, their training etc. Not necessarily the breed. I have seen heavy horses jump and love it.
