  1. i won a canon 450d on a tv show last week. im a bit of a camera head now but the 450d is by far the best camera.. i was like you----- money ---brand ect...  but i would say if u has a canon stick with it if nikon sick with the nikon. but as a over all package canon. hope this helps

  2. The 450D is an excellent camera, the kit lens which comes with the 450D is also quite good. You don't necessarily need a dedicated macro lens.  You can get a set of extension tubes for not much money.  The extension tubes are hollow tubes which sit between the lens and the body, changing the focal plane of the lens, in essence turning the lens into a macro lens capable of close focusing.  I have the Canon extension tubes, which work with both the EF and the EF-S lenses.

  4. I have a 450d, love it. Yes to do proper macro photography to a high standard you do really need a macro lens, how ever there are ways to get around this.

First is just to put up with what you are given, the ability to do macro photography with an slr is fantastically better than that on a point and shoot camera.

Second is to get extension tubes to reduce the minimum focus distance (one of the main reasons for getting a macro lens). It will reduce photo quality a little, but not significantly, but they do mean you have to focus manually and for only £15 ($30) its a very cheap solution.

As a camera to jump up from a p&s camera you will love it, but one other thing to factor in you budget is a tripod, aim to spend no less than £40-50 to get one that is suitable.

    Hope I have helped

  5. The supplied lens focus pretty close for what it is.   With 12MP you can afford to crop into this a fair bit if required.  Check this out before you spend money you don't have to.

If it isn't up to what you want...

Canon 50mm f2.5 macro is a good wee macro lens, it's not a 'full size' macro lens, but the crop of the EOS450 (1.6x) helps a bit.  Working distance is a wee bit close to the subject, af is very slow, but optically its great for the cash, and they crop up used,

It's not all that expensive in the scheme of things new (£200) and cheaper used.  It will also give you a very fine portrait lens as well.

I have the sigma 70mm which is full frame (x1.6) and allows a bit more working distance.  It's a bit more money at £300, but if you are into your macro then its worth it.  Optically it is a beaut.

Don't forget a solid tripod (buy a decent one and you'll never need buy another) mirror lock up and a remote.

I would even suggest buying a used 350 or 400 if you need to save money, but a proper macro lens is an absolute must.  Extenders and filters are rubbish in comparison and a false economy.

BTW you will get the best results with manual focus for accurate macropictures.
