  2. Well, I think you get what you pay for. I just spent almost $2,000 on homeschooling materials for two of my three children for the upcoming year ( thank you stimulus check).

I don't intend to always spend that much, but for getting started, there were just some things we couldn't skimp on.

Are you interested in a Christian curriculum, or just a very good one?

There are some GREAT classical curriculum's out there.

Regardless, if you want a decent education, you'll have to pay some money.

  3. The only one that I know of in Texas is Texas Virtual Academy which is k12, and they only enroll students through the 8th grade at this time.

There are some other affordable online schools like Progress Academy. Progress Academy is open to anyone with access to an internet connection. As an online curriculum program, they are available around the world to provide a quality homeschooling curriculum. Progress Academy is unique because they offer an annual subscription with a customized student account. You may pick and choose the courses you would like, and have 365 days to work at your own pace.

Progress Academy is not a free onlne school but is affordable. For as low as $71.00 a month you can enroll and get everything you need. This school is available for children grades k-12.

They provide a broad range of tools within their curriculum using digital on-line textbooks and interactive streaming videos. Pearson/Prentice-Hall, McGraw-Hill, Scott Foresman Education Divisions, United Streaming, BrainPop and Digital Curriculum are all recognized as industry leaders in education that they use.

  4. I disagree (respecfully) with Manda.

I think being able to afford a complete curriculum is great but there are many complete curriculums available at homeschool swaps because people have purchased curriculums that do not work for them.

We listened to the homeschool veterans  when we started homeschooling.  We bought a couple of used books at our local homeschool store that recycles books/curriculums.

We were very happy that we did not invest big dollars in things that can be learned with a library book and research online.

It helps that our state is lenient and homeschool friendly.   We are not required to follow any of the state mandated public school standards.  In other words, we can choose our own curriculum.    Our style is relaxed-eclectic and we use books we find in the trash bins  at school (we are school employees), use the library, use onlive video and audio, and online resources.   Our son has tested well since being at home and is learning more than he learned in public school.

You can learn without a virtual school and without complete curriculum from a supplier.

  5. Brigham Young University Independant Study.  They offer middle school classes, as well as high school on up...  The classes aren't free but they are way cheaper than a private school, etc.  I am finishing my junior year, in high school and have been studying in the program for two years.  It's a great way to get a good education, better than public school (I think personally).  check it out online
