  1. Franco's in Jermyn Street  (behind Fortnum & Mason)

looks nothing from outside, but portions are excellent, staff friendly and the taste...bellissimo!

  2. Carluccio's is a nice Italian restaurant that is pretty reasonable, they have restaurants all over London. The River Cafe has got to be one of the best and most authentic Italian restaurants in London though.

  3. Bar italia, in soho (actually, the restaurant that is just to the left of the bar proper), is, as far as I know, one of the most traditional italian restaurants-bars in town.

They show the italian broadcasts of the football matches, there coffee is expensive (2+pounds) but great. And, actually, you see italians serving and (most importantly) as guests.

I went there for dinner and for lunch (and during the world cup) and it was definitely way above average. For me it was a  little pricey, but the quality of the food and service was worth it, and it was approved by some picky italian acquaintances too.

And it is in Soho, so nothing complicated about finding it.

    Cheers

  4. china town

  5. strada

  6. Assaggi Chepstow Place W2.

Assaggi was awarded a Michelin star in 2005 & securing a reservation at one of its 11 tables has become harder than ever. Readers applaud the food as ‘exceptional’ & claim that Assaggi is ‘one of the best Italians in London’. None of the dishes is particularly fancy but the quality of ingredients is ‘top notch’ (the fritto misto includes turbot, for instance) & chef Nino Sassu knows how to get the best from them. Prawns on a bed of pea purée, gnocchi with sausage ragu & grilled venison with chestnuts taste ‘just delicious’. Sassu’s co-owner Pietro Fraccari, meanwhile, ensures that service from ‘lovely Italian staff’ is ‘fantastic’. Michelin-starred it may be but the dining room remains low-key – ‘noisy’ & ‘rather ordinary’, even, with only some statuesque flower arrangements relieving the simplicity. Don’t be deceived, however: prices are top drawer, though the consensus is it’s ‘worth it’.
