Question:

Good Meat-Free Meals?

I am 13 and I have decided, in order to improve my health, to both exercise more (take walks around my neighborhood twice daily) and also to reduce the amount of meat I eat. While tonight I might have a small piece of T-Bone steak, which is something I don't get often, I will not eat meat on most days. I am trying to limit my meat intake to twice a week instead of every day.

What are some good meals that exclude meat? I don't need any recipe (as Google is wonderful for that), but I would like some names of good dishes.

  1. Btw you don't have to reduce your meat intake that much to be healthy, just make sure you eat the right amount of servings in proportion to how active you're lifestyle is.

But if you are looking for substitutes, there are omelettes, tofu, wheat gluten products, beans and legumes.

Falafel is pretty tasty and despite being deep fried its still pretty healthy. It's some middle eastern dish made with ground chickpeas with coriander, cumin, bulgur  all mixed together into balls and then deep fried.

You can do so much with chick peas, you can have lots of soups and salads, or patties.

  2. If you are trying to eat healthier, you can still eat meat... just limit the amounts of red meat, and eat more chicken, fish, and pork (in pork chop style NOT things like bacon or sausage). Chicken and fish are VERY good for you. Look up mediterranean and Indian dishes, they are very veggie-heavy. Also, Asian stir fry is a good way to go. If you are planning on going the tofu route, make sure you get skim, or low fat tofu, the regular style is just as unhealthy as red meat! I like using chickpeas and black beans as well, mexican dishes are great for that.

  3. All hummy and easy!  Eggplant parmegian, spaghetti with mushrooms and onions/peppers if you want, stuffed manicotti, vegetarian lasagne, mushrooms stroganoff over rice, grilled summer squash and onion kebabs over rice, loaded baked potatos (minus bacon, of course!)

Also experiment with salads.  Try combos of fruit and nuts like apples and walnuts, or raspberries and walnuts or strawberries and pecan.   Try different cheeses and veggies.  It's so easy to whip up a quick vinagrette with oil/vinegar and some dijon mustard and spices.

Add a bit of honey for sweetness wth the fruit ones.  oH another good one - oranges and toasted almonds on mixed greens.

  4. try a meatless lasagna, eggplant parmesan, vegetable soup, the list goes on and on,tofu, and try protabella mushrooms, they make great burgers.

  5. We also try to have a couple of meatless dishes each week, especially in the summer.   Try Taco Salad (no meat;  the beans & cheese are the protein);   Greek Salad (feta cheese);  Pasta Salad (no meat, just cheese) ...Tacos with no meat (just beans & cheese)
