  1. Hackney cheap and lovely people

  2. Dulwich is quite a long way out and is expensive.

If you want to be near the Elephant ( which is really just a big traffic intersection with a run-down shopping centre in it, try Kennington. Its very close, but is reasonably safe and has good ammenities.

  3. london is just not safe to much crime /!

  4. Elephant and castle is quiet a built up area your friend is right about newington but what i would say there is good and bad all over London but seeing i am a Londoner i would say dulwich is generally nice and green forest hill  too avoid -(peckham ).........(newcross)has a few bars has there is a college there make sure u go with friends .....after dark take a cab getting home

anyone that tells you other that peckham is safe they would never let there own mother walk down there at night .Waterloo is near elephant and castle but apart from the station its a bit shoddy a few beggars .clapham is nice good nightlife lots and lots of restaurants of all kinds bars etc anyway i hope this helps look on google earth for dulwich etc.......good luck
