Good Trek bike?

Question

What is a good Trek road bike that will stand up to long distance trips, that is not a thousand dollars or more?

Specialized, Giant, Cannondale, Lemond, Bianchi, are all high quality brands.  Start studying all the components on the various models at similar price ranges, and you will see that for the most part, you get the same level of components.  What varies is the frame geometry, which is why you need to be fitted properly. I have friend with a Giant bike very similar to my Trek, but his has a higher standover height despite the fact that they both are the same frame size.  

Anyway, you can find most prices online, but these bikes have to be purchased from a bike shop and can't be ordered online, so do a little shopping around at your local bike stores and see what is out there.  The economy sucks so they should be willing to deal.

While the bikes mentioned in the last answer are under $1K, the bike you want for long distances is the Trek 520 which is $1,200-1,300. A long distance bicycle needs to be durable and comfortable. I can't see those being very comfortable on long distance rides. Your best bet is to find a used 520. Also, consider the fact that Trek is on the higher end when it comes to price. You can get a bike with the same level of quality from almost all the manufacturers found at bike shops. You'll pay dearly for their marketing budget. That's why they cost more. I used to own two Treks ( an '90 1400 and a '04 carbon 5200) and they were both great bikes but not any better than most of the rigs out there in the same class.
