  1. This area is sprawling, and unlike NYC does not have a good public transportation system.  What that means is that unless you live close to where you work, you will spending an awful amount of time in the car.

Also because of some changes in the law and the down economy local governments are cutting way back.  While there will always be a need for fire fighters, few departments are hiring or expanding services right now.

There are troubled high crime spots to avoid, but a neighborhood a mile or 2 away maybe be perfectly safe and affordable.

An area of growth is the East side from Lee Vista to Waterford Lakes.  All of the newer and older neighborhoods are reasonably safe with a large range of homes and apartments.

  2. Don't let the Disney lights blind you.  Orlando is currently #11 in violent crimes.. That's beating Compton and Miami.  Read about Nicole Ganguza.

I hear that Texas has better bargains, but I'm not as well versed with it.

  3. I live in Florida but I avoid Orlando at all costs. It is hotter than h**l there because it is inland and is not near the ocean. The traffic there is awful year round because of all of the tourists and senior citizens on the road at all times of the day. And housing in Orlando is somewhat expensive compared to other areas in Florida. Florida is not a good place to move right now. Trust me on this one. The housing market here is maybe the worst in the nation and we have an insurance crisis on our hands right now. The job market here is also poor and the jobs that are available don't pay much more than minimum wage. Also, many small businesses fail in Florida. They come and go all the time. It has always been like that in Florida. But if you absolutely must move to Florida, pick somewhere on the coast. At least you get nice ocean breezes.

  5. We moved out of Long Island almost two years ago due to a similar situation.  We now live in a town called Deltona which is full of NY'ers that left that NY attitude back home.  It's a great location.  We're 30 minutes from Daytona Beach and 30 minutes to Orlando, also about 40 minutes to all the theme parks.

    Good luck and God bless.

  6. Just like any city, there are good areas and bad areas.  I am from Long Island and moved to Florida with my hubby.  We live in western Orlando just on the border of Ocoee.  We've found that downtown Orlando is a scary area, and anything on the North side of State Road 50.

Clermont is a very open and growing community about 20 minutes from Downtown Orlando and the housing there is nice and cheap.  Celebration is extremely expensive and you have to go through all the tourist attractions (and that means tourist drivers) to get to Downtown (I'm assuming, as a firefighter, he'd be working downtown).  Again, Ocoee is nice, but you have to stick around the side south of State Road 50... actually, there is a gorgeous outdoor shopping area that built a brand new fire station next to it with some nice houses.. One complex is called Daniels' Crossing.  I forget the other one's name, but I'm sure you could find it in a search.

I would suggest getting into an apartment here for a year.  That way, you can see for yourself which areas are good and bad, and which ones are close to work for you and all that.  We live right off of SR 50, but on the good side and it isn't too bad here - We just shop on the good side of town. :)  Rent is around $800 for a 1 bedroom at the moment.

  7. celebation fl, right outside of orlando, it's a pivate, gated community

  8. Go to a search engine and look for cities around Orlando.  Then look up the crime rate. Hopefully that will help.
