  1. $4 gas is not expensive.

    ($4/gallon) * (12.000miles/year) / (20miles/gallon) = ($2400/year)

Much less than 10% of median income for something of extreme utility.

  2. It's hard for a hillbilly to sustain his status in the community if he's not driving a 15 year old beat up pickup with oversized tires and a "Honk If You're Horny" bumper sticker.

  3. There is no good argument against fuel-efficient vehicles.  Buy a Prius, and you will love it.  I do.

  4. If you like paying $3.50 a gallon for gasoline and have a full size suburban SUV that costs $120 to fill. I go the other way, I want a vehicle that would get as much gas mileage as possible. This way it's cheaper to fill and you can go longer with less.

  5. it depends on need more than anything else. why buy a prius when you need to pull a 7500lb trailer? on the other hand why buy an F150 when you commute 30 each day one way, and all you need is enough room for yourself, and perhaps one or two other people. there are ways to maximize fuel economy for every vehicle, but dont expect large pickups to get 30mpg, and dont expect a prius to pull 7500lbs.

  6. if al gore says we all need them and he uses a limo and private jet you do the math

  7. there can't possibly be a good argument against these types of vehicles for the simple fact that the resource (crude oil) is drying up.

we will be in dire straights economically and environmentally if we don't continue the trend for the search for self sustaining fuel sources.

developing countries such as china are putting a huge drain on an already stretched infrastructure and emissions will be substantially increased as these countries embrace this inefficient technology.

hydrogen powered vehicles are proven as one of the best alternatives but it doesn't fly because of corporate greed and a difficulty in establishing the required infrastructure.

we must conserve and limit our usage worldwide for many reasons and lose the mindset that a hummer is a viable purchase option.

  8. Yes. Power to pull a trailer or haul goods. Power for construction vehicles.

  9. Well while I agree that some people will always need big 4x4 type vehicles (SUVs in the states), for hauling, off-roading, etc not all need them.  I am tired of seeing them in urban areas where its quite obvious they are not needed.

As to the person who said that bigger vehicles are more safe, well thats true from a certain point of view.  But in the EU, they tested a variety of different vehicle sizes in crash tests, and a lot of the SUV type vehicles did worse than typical family cars.  All depends on its build quality I guess.

  10. High cost to the environment (Nickel Mines kill everything in the surrounding area)

China where they send the nickel to has no pollution control standards and use massive amounts of power to convert the raw metal to components. This alone negates any (green savings)

The components of the car are extremely hard to recycle and as far I have read up there has yet to be one that has been recycled, Many sit in junk yards wrapped in plastic due to the dangers of the battery,

    Repair costs OUCH!

In the long run just in the energy that is saved in the manufacturing process You could own a hummer and drive it for 10 years and have less environmental impact.

Building a Toyota Prius causes more environmental damage than a Hummer that is on the road for three times longer than a Prius. As already noted, the Prius is partly driven by a battery which contains nickel. The nickel is mined and smelted at a plant in Sudbury, Ontario. This plant has caused so much environmental damage to the surrounding environment that NASA has used the ‘dead zone’ around the plant to test moon rovers. The area around the plant is devoid of any life for miles

Google Sudbury and you can see the damage from space.

    How "green" is that?

  11. Are u qualified to know what size of engine a 18 wheeler has ,I don't think so. The government doesn't either.

  12. It is my understanding that larger vehicles are safer. I don't know that to be fact, but if so, then smaller, more fuel efficient cars would not be as safe.

Another problem is room to carry a lot for weekends and vacation. Also pulling your boat or RV'S.
