Question:

Good at skiing or snowboarding, but afraid of taking the ski lifts?

Days ago, I met this girl at a local ski resort when we were skiing at the same blue runs. As I could tell, she's good at downhill ski. When we're taking the ski lift back to the top, she told me on the lift "Skiing is the easy part for me, taking the lift is always the tough one".

Do you think so? And why?

  1. Probely the fear of highs is scarry and most ski lifts don't have the buckle. And then when you get one you have to make sure your ski doesn't get caught or getting off you have to make sure that you don't fall or run into people...

and your afraid to fall off.

  2. same i get so scared!!!!!

  3. Quite a few people are afraid the lift is going to break.  or they're going to get stuck up there... fear of heights is a bummer I guess!

I, thankfully, have no problems with the lifts.

  4. I don't agree but that's because I don't get motion sick or have a fear of heights, I actually enjoy the lift (on a nice day).

  5. I know the feeling, I can't stand to ride with the bar up

for some reason I have these weird thoughts about falling off the lift and I never look backwards, it freaks me out

  6. some peaople are just different but shes taking the lift so obviously it cant be that hard for her

  7. Acrophobia. Fear of heights.

  8. There a lot of good skiers that are afraid of heights & have trouble taking certain lifts that are high. My advice is to avoid looking down & you won't notice how high you are. A couple other things you can do is carry on a converstation & take your mind off the height. Also, another great idea is to watch the best skiers & this will distract you from the lift ride & you can learn form watching.

  9. Some people are not good at getting off and on the lifts...that's just the way it is. Personally, I don't understand people who can't load the right way. I see the same people come through my lift line weekend after weekend and always seem to somehow mess it up. Getting off for some people is tricky...this I understand. Usually it has a lot to do with poor timing and lack of balance...both easily corrected if practiced. However....psychology being what it is, some people who have taken a few spills coming of the chair will get it into their heads that they will mess up the unloading before they even come close to the top of the hill. It's the glass-half-empty theory. They think they are going to fall...so they fall. I see this all of the time as well. If I'm running the lift from the top shack, I can guarantee the same people will either signal to slow the lift down or they will fall everytime.

Then you have your acrophobics and others with motion sickness problems. That's a whole other ball game. My dad hated ski lifts because he was afraid of heights. He got over it in his mid-40s. He still has never skied, but now he'll go on roller coasters and he'll ride the chairlift on "scenic" rides or when we go on Alpine Slides or Devalcarts.
