Not a travel guide, history book or biography ... just a good book to read!! Something that will immerse me in the culture of the country, maybe even feel like I'm vacationing there. (Even better if it takes place in Bahia)

  3. Brasyl is a 2007 novel by British author Ian McDonald. It has been nominated for the 2008 Hugo Awards in the best novel category.

Brazil by John Updike - a tale of doomed lovers with wry reference to the Tristan and Isolde legend.

I would add my vote also for the works of Jorge Amado.  But even more impressive are the works of Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, in particular

    1876 - Helena

1881 - Memórias Póstumas de Brás Cubas (The Posthumous Memoirs of Bras Cubas, also known in English as Epitaph for a Small Winner) -----a personal favorite -----

1891 - Quincas Borba (also known in English as Philosopher or Dog?)

1904 - Esaú e Jacó (Esau and Jacob)
