  1. Daughter of the River by Hong Ying ( China)

Bitter Fruit by Achmat Dangor (South Africa)

Gabriela, Clove and Cinnamon by Jorge Amado ( Brazil)

The Amado novel is the most enjoyable of the three. It links the pleasures of food and s*x in a tasteful way.

  2. A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini

    Angela's Ashes by Frank McCourt

    Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov

The State Counsellor by Erast Petrovich Fandorin

  3. Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky (my favorite book ever)

The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz (this is a true, incredible story--told first hand)

  4. The Morel Invention by Adolfo Bioy Casares

The death of Ivan Ilich by Tolstoy

    Candide by Voltaire

    A life by Maupassant

  5. For foreign authors (can they be translated works?), I really enjoyed reading works by Banana Yoshimoto. She has several works that have been translated, which you might like. They are fairly light and easy to read, but at the same time tackle current issues.

Niccolò Ammaniti is another author I would suggest. He's Italian, and his debut novel "I'm Not Scared" is truly a captivating work of art! I believe he has a few more works that are published in English.

I hope I was able to help and enjoy your reading!

  6. I like the book Evil by Swedish author Jan Guillou. It was quite some years ago I read it now though but I believe I'd still like it.

It's about a kid who is abused by his father. He is a delinquent at school. Fights a lot. He is expelled and his mother sells off a lot of paintings and stuff to enroll him in a high class school. This is his last chance so he can not afford to be expelled. In that school it's not the teachers who give punishment but a students committee. Which he soon makes enemies of, since he don't agree with how they do stuff.

    It's a good read anyways.
