I'm tutoring a 2nd grader and 6th grader this whole summer in both English and Math? I know that a 2nd greader must know addition and subtraction and a 6th grader must know how to add subtract multiply and divide. But what are some good books that they can read? And what vocabulary should they know?

  1. 6th - Watsons Go to Birmingham

  2. Look up Dolch word lists (it should come up on a search engine) for sight word vocabulary.  Also, check the state standards (available at the state's dept. of ed. website usually) for other important skills needed for the next school year in reading and math.

I always ask the students what they are interested in and find books about that when I tutor.  Here are some good authors:

    2nd

    Eric Carle

    Patricia Polacco

    Gail Gibbons

    6th

    Beverly Cleary

Jane Yolen (some dark historical themes, consult parents first)

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Go to these sites, http://www.readingrockets.org and http://www.rif.org  They both have a wealth of information about literacy.

    Good luck!

  3. Girls in 6th- The clique series

Girls in 2nd- Junie B. Jones, Baby Sitter Club, American Girl Series

    Boys in 2nd- Captain Underpants

  4. 2nd graders- The Magic Tree House Series, The Babysitter's Club, Ramona books, Junie B. Jones, etc.

6th graders-A Series of Unfortunate Events, The Clique Series, The Christy Miller Series, The Sierra Jensen Series, Left Behind Series, etc.
