Question:

Good books/videos for MMA disciplines?

Me and a friend were interested in starting in MMA, but since we both work and go to school full time, we really don't have time to join a gym and train professionally yet. So in the meantime, we're trying to find good books or videos that could help us out on training in some of the disciplines. So, does anyone know of any that could help with wrestling, boxing, kickboxing, judo, BJJ, etc? And where I might find them for cheap?

  1. well Randy Couture has the Wrestling for MMA and BJ Penn has a MMA book to how ever if you want to learn from youtube and books expect to get hurt

  2. I disagree with who posted before me. Just because you learn from books, dvds, and resources online, doesn't mean you won't learn anything, and you'll hurt yourself.

Mac Danzig began his MMA training from grappling dvds, and training with friends.

MMA is full of brothers. Ninja and Shogun. The Gracie family. Fedor and Aleksander. The list goes on and on and on. Why do you think these guys are so proficient? They have live in training partners! When everyone else leaves the gym, they leave their training there. When you live with your training partner you can go home and work on things you've learned at your own pace.

I think the whole idea that you can't learn without paying the ridiculous tuition fees of gyms is an false fact spread by owners of gyms looking for revenue or the completely uneducated.

Bruce Lee only had four years of formal martial arts training and never received a black belt in the art he did study, Wing Chun. He did hook up with other skilled martial artists and develop techniques and train in private. He went on to become what many consider the greatest martial artist of all times.

    So, yea.

Anyways, here are some suggestions. Any of the books by the Gracie family are awesome for BJJ. I suggest Renzo and Royler Gracie's Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Theory and Techniques as a great introduction to the sport. Royler Gracie's Submission Grappling Techniques will help when you've learned the basics. Then pick up Royce Gracie's Ultimate Fighting Techniques Volumes 1 and 2. BJ Penn's new book is called Mixed Martial Arts : The Book of Knowledge and is an excellent primer on all things MMA. You can really learn a lot. For muay Thai there's a series called Muay Thai Unleashed which is good, and check out a book called Muay Thai Techniques. There are beginner and advanced editions.

As far as dvds goes, I really like a series by Rigan Machado, but the options are endless. Do a Google search for Black Belt magazine, find their website and check out their store, they have a lot of excellent options.

    Hope that helps. Train!

One more thing. AWESOME book on Judo called Judo Unleashed. Check it out.

  3. You could watch a lot of MMA fights in addition to BJJ/ Wrestling/ Muay Thai instruction videos. OVGuide.com has all that stuff for free and a pretty good selection.

    Good Luck.

  4. go to budovideos.com...they have practically ever video you could ever want. panther also makes some..available from century martial arts.

get yourself a black belt magazine and look for ads.

by far the best videos ive seen are from www.groundfighter.com ...absolutely great videos from some of the best. guys like mario sperry, murilo bustamante, duke roufus, marcelo garcia (my fav. bjj fighter ever) ..igor yakimov(sambo) ...ricardo de la riva, karo parysian (judo for mma) tony cecchini (catch wrestling)  ...and others...check em out.

not only is the material excellent..but the way the videos are setup is also excellent..each technique is a separate section of the video..you can go straight to the technique you want..or pause it between for practicing.
