  1. Just a little note: a lot of shows DO NOT ALLOW HALF CHAPS for western or english. even the little ones. they give unfair advantages of sticking to the horse over regular tall boots and paddock boots. english shows usually accept jodstraps (for youth) and tall boots (adults and youth)

Western you are probably allowed full chaps, jeans, and western boots. Breeches come in all different kinds, be sure to get the show apprpriate kind, either all green, tan white or black. none of this purple and pink stuff made for practice and schooling.

  2. My favourite all time breches are by Equetech....they have a brilliant fit, a suede like seat and are so well cut. They last for years. Pikeur are also an excellent brand. Ariat are a super quality, but sadly they are always to long for me :o(....so I have a brand by Tredstep ireland called 'pro-gaiter legging' which are super quality, and worn over short boots, look just like regular long boots. The english gaiter company are also very stylish for boots and half chaps.you can view the ranges at

www.olneysaddlery.co.uk, I am in the UK..so don't know if they are easy to source where you are

    hope this helps :o)

  3. It depends on your area. For your first sets, I would recommend against buying off the internet. You need to find your size, see how things fit. Ask sales associates to help with this if you can't find the right fit - comfort is important.

I go to Dover Saddlery, but that's a Northeastern chain. If you know of your local tack shops, check there. If not, ask your instructor, or around your barn. They should be able to point you to the right shop.

As for brands, I highly recommend the Kerrits breeches. They're really comfortable, especially their Flo-rise fit. As for chaps, I go for fit first, brand second. I currently have Ariats, but while they're high quality, they are not known for "good" prices, in my opinion.
