  1. The nerve of some people.

If you going to tell somebody they have to spend $2000 just to get started, you are crazy.

$200 can get you a discontinued system that will blow the doors off of all those BIG NAMES.

I have a Logitech Z-5450 (with wireless rear speakers) that works flawless. It's got more inputs than I know what to do with. And I have never had a problem with the rear speakers connecting to the base (even with a wireless router and using my Logitech wireless controller).

Some people just love to be big shots with their Bose and their Onkyo. Stupid people spend money for names.

  2. If you only want to spend $50 on a system you do not want something good, you want a piece of c**p. You can not get anything even remotely good for that price. IF you wanted to spend $400-$800 you could get a HTIB (home theater in a box) system that would NOT be good but it would function and give you some sort of surround sound. An entry level (read bottom level acceptable) system will cost you between $1000 and $2000. If you are willing to spend more than $2000 now you are just barely getting into good equipment. Save up your pennies.

  3. The only thing that $50 can get you is an OK set of speakers for a desktop computer.

For an actual home theater sound system, while there are all in one piece in the box cheapo systems around $100-$200, they're basically c**p, and don't let one have many plugins at all. Also, their speakers are, well, awful.

A good basic HT system will run you at least $400-$500, if you shop well for the parts. There are good 5.1 receivers available for $160-$200, in good name brands, like Onkyo, and Yamaha. There are good 5.1 speaker systems available for about $250, such as a Polk 6750 system available on amazon.com.  Add $20 bucks or so for a 100 foot roll of 16 gauge speaker wire, and thats about it.

With the provision that, good shopping around being equal, more bucks does get more capability. But, you need at least $500 to start properly.

    But, $50 ? Forget it.

  4. If you look around at your big box stores, you can find decent HTIB systems for around $500 and you will be pleasantly surprised...
