if you don't mind the extra weight of a digital SLR then I recommend the Olympus E-volt 500 series. I love mine.  I tried lots of those smaller point and shoot cameras, but you never can get the awesome quality that you get from a digital SLR

Hi there.   $600.00 will buy you one nice camera!!!   You choose.    There are Nikons,  Canons and Sonys in your price range.   The best part is going to Best Buy or Circuit City and put them in your hand.   You will find you like the features of one over the others... the way it looks or feels in your hands.   Looking for and buying a new camera is alot of fun and you will learn alot just by being able to ask the sales person all the important questions.  Good luck!!
