  3. mother india's cafe on argyle street does superb indian food - you get several little dishes so it can be as cheap or as expensive as you like. i'm pretty sure kids are welcome.

cottiers is a pub in a converted church on hyndland street that does great pub food - burgers, 2 for 1 enchiladas and the like. there's often kids in there and they have a great beer garden as well, weather permitting!

for italian food, paperino's and cafe antipasti, both on byres road, come highly recommended.

a newer place that i would recommend is the left bank on gibson street. they have a really varied, interesting/healthy menu that is very good value. they also do a selection of smaller, tapas-type dishes - always good for kids!

and for smaller snacks, lunch and more types of tea than you can shake a stick at, i have to mention the tchai ovna teahouse on otago st. it's a great little bohemian haven.
