Question:

Good cleats for a defender?

I play defender, usually wing defender. Since I am on the outside, I am doing a lot of man-to-man marking and running. So i need shoes that are light. But when it comes to defending, you want shoes that are sturdy and give good support so you can make a good tackle. What kind of cleat would be good for me, I currently use Nike talarias, but they are getting small.

  1. Adidas f50.8

  2. there really isn't a "defender" boot or an "attacker" boot.  it really just depends on what you prefer.  the big difference is between firm ground and soft ground conditions.  for comfort and durability, you can't beat a good kangaroo leather.  buy them a 1/2 size small, and the kangaroo leather stretches to fit your foot like a sock.  there is a reason the ADIDAS COPA MUNDIAL is a classic. you can get the firm ground Copas for about $90.  I have the soft ground version.  for firm ground, i use the UMBRO XBOOT III.  u can get those for $130.  LOVE those boots.

for support, buy an insert made of memory foam-type material.  you can get them pretty much anywhere & the insert will form to your foot to provide you custom support.

  3. I'm also a wing back and yes, you do tend to do alot of running and man-to-man working.

I don't really tend to find that boots have a real impact on your performance. It is you who does the magic not your boots - try to remember than.

Just pop down to your local sports shop and find some boots that fit you and feel comforatable and you will be able to play to the best of your ability.
