Im thinking about updating my computer. Any programs that are a must have?

assuming you have windows, i'd say object dock - www.stardock.com and www.wincustomize.com for skins

Bittorrent client - Google bittorrent, use www.thepiratebay.org for torrents

iTunes for sure - www.apple.com

a-comodo firewall pro(free)(the only free firewall to pass matousec leaktest with an excellent score 95%  (after installing it go to firewall tab then stealth port wizard and set it to block all incoming conections)

note:this won't affect any p2p propgrams(limewire,bitcomet and etc)

Guys, he wants SECURITY software. Not MacOSX!

I recommend:

Antivirus, if you don't already have one:

Avast or Avira (avoid AVG 8, its slow ever since ver7.5)

OR any paid-for antivirus (but avoid Norton 360).

Anti-malware (get all four):

Lavasoft Ad-aware

Malwarebytes Anti Malware (this is good for removing the infamous XP Antivirus 2008 rogue AV)

Spybot Search and Destory.

Hijackthis (a brute force approach to removing malware)

Firewall:

Comodo Firewall.

Your windows default firewall also works fine, too.

Others:

Ccleaner (use this program to wipe all traces of your browsing history, recent apps and so on).

Firefox 3 (browse safely) with Adblock extension (no more advertising!)

Startup Monitor (notifies you whenever a program is registered to startup, gives you option to allow or deny)

Sysinternals Process Explorer (a better version of the Task Manager)

Forget about windows and use Mac OS X. Then, you need Norton anti-virus. iWork is optional, you can use Neo-office or Open-office.
