  1. Any time you enter the US, you need a passport. If you come in off a ship, you've been considered to have been out of the country. You need one to re-enter. Cruise lines require you to have a passport before they will board you. If you plan to travel at all, get one ASAP.

  2. Right now, and for about the next 4 months, you can go on just about ANY cruise leaving from AND returning to a US port, like Mexico, the Bahamas, and/or the Caribbean without a passport.  You will be OK with your birth certificate and photo ID. The rules will change sometime in the next 4 months; the Federal Agencies responsible for the policy have only said thus far, "some time as early as mid-summer" a passport will be required of all persons entering the US. So you can go and come without a passport as long as your cruise is completed before the end of June or July.

However, when you look for a cruise you should make sure that the cruise line is not requiring a passport. Many cruise lines are strongly urging that all passengers have a passport just in case of emergency. For example, if you get sick, or if the ship has a problem and you have to fly back home, you'll need a passport to reenter the US at the airport.

  3. We have a cruise planned for end of March. We do not have passports, they are not yet needed for cruises to Mexico or the Bahamas.Keep checking the Homeland Security website.I have recently heard it's been pushed back to 2009,but have not verified it for myself. You do need one for air travel outside (to and from) the U.S.

I do know we should have them but we're a family of 4 on a teacher's salary.

  4. If you live in the USA homeland security will not allow you to leave the country or enter the country without a passport.  Last year it was just for air travel now this year it is for air and sea travel.

And soon it will also be for auto travel at the borders of Canada and Mexico.

    Hope this helps.

  5. at this time we have cruises with no passport and plan to as long as we can, and have a cruise planned for Feb 09 and we are watching as the rules are ever-changing. as of right now until some time in July all you need is a birth certificate and picture ID however the cruise lines still encourage you to get one.

however there is a new pass card for land and sea travel ONLY, if needed this is what we will be getting as it is half the price as the passport, here is the link so you can see if this is for you:
