Good days for Troy Kelly after the second-place finish at the Greenbrier Classic
After earning the runner-up spot in the Greenbrier Classic last week, La Quinta resident Troy Kelly moved to Illinois in order to participate in the final pre-British Open tournament, John Deere Classic, scheduled to start from Thursday, July 12, 2012.
Prior to losing against Ted Potter on the third extra hole in the playoffs, he had the best PGA Tour career finish, tied for the 37th position at this year’s Mayakoba Golf Classic.
Moreover, he only made six cuts in 14 tournaments that he played before the last week’s dramatic finish at The Old White TPC.
He himself admitted that he was ready to play anywhere and everywhere he got a chance to play, towards the ending phase of the year, in order to earn some money. This approach was adopted to receive an exemption for the 2013 PGA Tour season.
Therefore, the second-place finish was not just a usual end of a tournament to him. In fact, it was one of the biggest moments of his life that earned him the $658,800 prize money. Earlier, he only had $81,000 in his pocket.
In addition to that, his best finish of the career also earned him a spot in next week’s British Open.
“Going over to the British Open will be nice with some kind of success behind me”. Kelly said. “And I think I would be pretty close to a lock for the (FedEx Cup) playoffs, and some of the tournaments later in the year, Las Vegas and Frys.com, that I might
not had been in before. I think I will get in now”.
He told that he brought considerable improvements in his driving technique in the past few weeks. Moreover, his new caddie and brother, Ryan Kelly, also helped him make better judgments on the greens.
“I finally made some putts. That's what I was happy about. And I actually enjoyed my time on the course,” he said.
“I made a change at caddie and he's been carrying for me. He's been helping me read greens. Just having a second opinion is great. He knows my game well”.
Kelly also told that his brother may not be a part of his team after Reno-Tahoe Open.
