Good deal for a violin?

I just got a 1994 Clemens violin for $5,000 on this website: http://www.clemensviolins.com/)

So why was the price on this violin so low? Did I get a good deal?

  1. That is actually REALLY expensive.  That would be a great price for a violin from the early 1900's.  You got scammed, dude.

  2. I wouldn't say you got scammed.  Yes, those violins are a respected brand, and Elderly Instruments is a highly respected reseller.

Whether it was a terrific or just so-so deal depends on a lot of things that we can't tell you on this site; you should find the nearest professional violin shop (call a nearby professional symphony and ask where their violinists take their instruments for service, if you don't know which shop to go to already).  They can do an expert appraisal and give you an accurate idea of a proper retail on your little beauty.

And you'll want to become familiar with that shop anyway--you have something that deserves the best treatment.
