  1. "The dealer claims everything is in good shape" -- of course they do, but have it checked out by a mechanic first. Don't even think of buying an 11-yr old vehicle without a mechanic's check.

90s-model Jettas were not even close to being reliable. I wouldn't even consider this car. There are much better cars out there.

Also, $3000 is pricey for this year and model. Dealer trade value on it is about $600. I'd offer him $1200, maybe $1400 tops if you must have it.

  2. I've been looking at Jettas too but from everything I read on Edmunds.com, they're in constant need of repair and it's very pricey if you can't do it yourself. I think $3000 is too much.

  3. Jetta's are not that reliable and when they do break it costs a ton to fix them. $3,000 is also a bit pricey for that car, I wouldnt pay more than $1,800 -$2,000 for it if its in good shape, and I probably wouldnt want that car at all, cool car but not relaible.

  4. VW is a bad idea because expensive to repair!

  5. Here's a link to the MSN reliabilty data for that year Volkswagen and it really is not too bad the things that are prone to fail on it are very minor and cheap to fix.

According to Edmunds trade in value for this model year and mileage is about 1900 dollars (not 600 as someone else stated). The Dealer retail price is about 3700 dollars. I would try and get them down to 2600 or 2700 dollars and have it checked out by a good VW mechanic. If it all checks out go for it. The VR6 model has much better reliability than the 4 cylinders. Here is a link to some customer reviews from Edmunds make sure that you are reading the V6 owner's reviews. Good Luck!
