Good editing software? help? New video making career?

Okay so my friend and I just bought this new camera called the MX-10 i believe. Well we filmed our first video today and have it stored on my computer. The file is a .avi file i believe. From there can i get a good editing software for my video without distorting the quality? I'm willing to learn so much and im dedicated. Just need a start. Any requierments idk?.
