  1. The way I see it is this:  you are an adult.  Your professor is not your keeper.

I would simply let her know that you will have to miss class on X dates.  Tell her that you care about the class, so you would like to know what you can do to keep from falling behind.

You don't need to ask permission.  You don't need to explain why you won't be in class.  Just make it clear that you are willing to do the work to keep up, and then do it.

  2. Personal family emergency

  3. I have been in this situation with a group of students who depended on each other to fulfill their portion of a case study for a group grade class project.  One student just decided he wasn't going to do his part and let the other teammates suffer.  He had plans to go skiing and wasn't going to let anything like a boring class project to get in the way.  We complained to the teacher, but she didn't care, all for one and one for all.  The grade would be equal for each student.  How well we work with teams was her motto.  As a student, I was mad, just like the other team players were mad, but, couldn't do anything about it.  You need the lab grade I would think, so if the teachers are covering for you and you don't tell the main teacher, you live a lie for the rest of your life.  Why sign up for the course if you can't fulfill the requirements?  Sorry, been there and didn't like it.  G00D Lvck.

  4. No good excuse short of dying to miss a class you paid money for.  I am sure you knew of the conflict, right?  Check the link for more information.

  5. I agree that I would be annoyed at a student who would miss class because of a camp, since you knew both the dates for the class and for the camp ahead of time.   However, any good reason for missing class for a week (illness, family emergency, etc.) you could expect to have to produce a formal excuse for.  If the week you are missing is one in which there are no major assignments due, I would just apologize and say I have a scheduling conflict that week.  However, if there is a midterm or something else going on at that time, you can't really give any excuse which would work and for which you would not be expected to have a formal excuse, so you might as well let them know.

  6. For a start, your teacher would say "Why would you be doing scouting on school time?"

You need to go to school to learn, if you need help you should ask for help.

If you don't, you will fail only because you never tried to work on what you can't do.

  7. Be honest and see if you can work out something with the professor. The truth is always best!
