Good family, maybe show dog...?

my dog is being put down tonight or tomorrow night, because he's very sick and we don't want him to suffer. (He is 12 years old, pure breed, blue meral miniature Sheltie. He is an x-show dog.) In my house we have a hamster, a bird, 2 cats, my sister, and I 16&19, and my parents. So yeah we're empty without a doggy. There has been dogs in my house my whole life, so my family decided it would be kind of empty without one, so we're going to buy another pure breed. The thing is my moms showed shelties her whole life, so we've never had another kind of dog. We're looking into getting a bi-black or bi-blue sheltie, but then again we don't know what type of dog we're going to get. Can anyone suggest a good types of family dogs, if it's a good show dog too, that would be awesome, it's not important though. We don't want it too big, but not too small. (If this helps we we're thinking of getting a golden, or a multi mini maltese. But like I said we don't want a dog too big or too small...)

  1. Go to your shelter. Pick out a couple of dogs you really like the look of. Ask if you can take them for a 'test walk" to see what their personality is away from the shelter.

Take your new family member home. If you want to show it, train it for obedience and/or agility. What a great way to honor your previous pets! And my condolences for your doggie.

  2. Are you going to show this one as well? If so, go to a website for a Kennel Club such as AKC or CKC and look for breeders.

If you are just looking to adopt a dog to have as a family pet, try a rescue or www.petfinder.com.

  3. how about a pug or a Rottweiler

  4. You should get a Welsh Pembroke Corgi. They are great family dogs I have one myself. They are not big at all and i just love them and you can train them to be in shows hope I helped !

  5. First of all I am so sorry for the loss of your dog.  I do think its wonderful that you are already wanting to open up your home and your hearts to another companion.

Definitely consider adopting.  Petfinder.com has both mixes and purebreds.  If you want a specific breed there are breed-specific rescue groups for just about any breed you can name.  It is completely possible to find one that is everything you could want.  The rescue people will work very hard to match you with just the right dog for your needs.  Many of them are fully papered and they often know a lot more of the dogs’ histories than a regular shelter.

Don’t get so hung up on showing the dog, look for a family friend first, and a show dog second.  Also consider finding a dog that has a talent for something like agility training.  You probably already know, Shelties are among the top breeds for the sport (though just about any dog can do it if it wants to!)  But the best thing about it is that there are many, many agility programs and competitions that welcome ALL breeds, papered or not, and even mixes (with the exception of specifically AKC-sanctioned events.)  You and your family can still have the fun of training and competing without a lot of the hassle of showing.

Good luck in your search, I know your next best friend is out there waiting for you!
