  1. Training at home is a complete waste of time and effort.

find yourself a good gym or dojo and learn there.

  2. I would recommend the phone book.  Seriously!  Unless there is some awful reason that you have no schools anywhere near you (even 3 hours away would be reasonable, if you truly wish to learn).  Even if you only go once a week, or even just once a month, you would be better off.

The problem with books and videos and "self teaching" is that you end up learning all of the wrong things and make them habits.  A good and qualified instructor will be able to guide you and correct you so that you:

    1) Do not injure yourself while training

    2) Do not waste time and energy learning something incorrectly that you then have to re-learn all over again

    3) Understand the finer subtleties of each and every movement all the way down to the breath

    4) Learn all the other aspects of the art rather than just how to brawl so that you are well balanced and well disciplined in all ways

    5) DO NOT INJURE YOURSELF WHILE TRAINING

Did you know that even Taijiquan (Tai Chi Ch'uan) requires a qualified instructor.  The reason for this is: not learning how to properly circulate the Chi can cause EXTREME illness and malady if done improperly.  Just learning to breathe and cultivate the breath can cause severe Gastrointestinal damage if done without the proper instruction . . . and that is practiced first while simply standing still . . .

  3. Whilst there are dozens of books and DVDs on self-defense and martial arts.  Some are good, whilst many are not.  But trying to learn proper technique from without even the benefit of a training partner is kind of like masturbation.

It bears no resemblance to the real thing.

  4. Would you "train at home" to be a doctor, lawyer, or professional athlete?

You will only get so much from a book, manual or video.

While they MAY contain some useful information, you need someone watching you to make sure you are doing it correctly, and partners of different physical attributes to train with.

There are MANY books out there that contain what you are looking for. Try AWMA.COM.
