  1. What is your budget?

MovieMaker comes bundled with Windows XP (with SP2). It does not handle DVD based video - you just need to convert it. Rip the video from the DVD using HandBrake

    then bring it into MovieMaker.

Alert: Video from DVD based camcorder brough into computers for editing is pretty bad. MiniDV tape is best available video... internal hard drive based video is in between miniDV tape and DVD based... though closer to tape.

DVD based camcorder have to compress a lot when the store that video . Compression = discarded data = reduced video quality. DV and HDV store to miniDV tape compresses the least of the currently available media used by consumer camcorders.
