  1. Try some colorful swordtails. They are vibrant and fun to watch. I have some beautiful red coral-eyed ones and some koi swordtails. They have live babies and are very active.

  2. There are a lot of easy to take care of fish you could get. Mollies, Platys, and Tetras are all pretty common but can be pretty cool. Any of those will live together and can make for a colorful tank.

  3. Definitely start with danios.  Your tank is going to have to cycle and they are one of the few fish that are hardy enough to survive it.  Get yourself 2-3 danios and keep them for a month.  If after a month your danios are doing well, then go back to the store and get yourself some more or some other fish.  Don't add any more than about 2-3 fish to your tank each week.  After the danios you can get some neon tetras, guppies, barbs, mollies or cory catfish or whatever.  But stick with the danios for your first fish.  It'll save you some heartbreak over dead fish from New Tank Syndrome.

  4. I suggest that you get 2-3 neon tetras. They're very good in a community. You should also get some type of a loach, any type that suits you best, because it's always good to have a bottom feeder in the tank. I don't suggest you get a blue gourami. They tend to be an aggressive fish-  especially in a smaller tank. The last one I had killed all of my fish. I will write more on here when I have some more good ideas. Don't have to many fish in the tank to start off with....gradually make your way up there. I also suggest you get one marbled molly! They're great fish! Oh I thought of another one! A fantail guppy is a good choice. If you decide not to get a loach, the last wonderful bottom feeder I owned was a plecotomus. The short name for them is pleco(say it like PleckO)

So basically...You should start off with about    5-6 fish or below. 2-3 neon tetras, 1 loach, 1 marbled molly, and/or a pleco. Well I guess that's seven, but you don't have to have 2 bottom feeders in the tank. Nothing wrong with it though :) This combination of fish will go nicely in a 20 gal tank and they won't be crouded.

Remember that when it's time to add more fish that you really don't need to get more than about 2 or 3. Keep it very simple. The reason why you should get a few more now is because you're started your tank off.

Hope you enjoy your new fish

  5. Only start with a few fish since your tank hasn't cycled yet, too many fish all at once will cause a huge amonia spike and you may lose a few.

A good starter fish for beginner's that are hardy are zebra danios.  These schooling fish are active swimmers, easy to care for and very hardy.

Other good comunity fish are pearl gouramis, drawf gouramis, platies, swordtails, mollies, rasboras, and tetras

  6. I would go with some livebearers like molly`s, platys, guppies, or swordtails. These are colorful , non-aggressive fish that are easy to maintain and very hardy. The only thing about them is thay breed like mad and do have live fry. Be sure that you get 2-3 female for every male of these livebearers. If you are not looking to raise fry, you can always get all females. Remember the rule of thumb is one inch per fishin your new tank. Have fun picking out your fish!!
