Question:

Good grief. What do I do if I used interior paint on my exterior front door?

Okay, it wasn't until I was inches from finishing that I realized that I had interior semi-gloss instead of exterior paint. What will happen? Will it just chip off the first time it rains? Should I start over? Should I try to cover it with something clear, like polyurethane? Darn it!

  1. Paint over it with an exterior paint.

  2. Cover with polyurethane is better and more safe

  3. Don't coat with something clear.  One of the several problems with using interior paint outside is that interior paint is not UV stabilized the same way an exterior paint is.  Any clear coating will let at least some UV light through, which will degrade the paint under the clear and cause problems down the road.

The solution is fairly simple.  Repaint over the interior with a good exterior paint.  Sooner better than later.  Make sure you get all of it covered well and you should be fine.
