Me and my friend are thinking of moving to Alberta Canada when we turn 19 - 20 ish (nearly 16 now) after we have completed an electrician apprenticeship in the UK, i heard that Edmonton and Calgary are short electrician's and other skilled jobs. Do you think Alberta is the best place to go in canada now from the uk ? ( or in my case 3 to 4 years now )

And i heard that skilled workers applying for permanent residence get a fast track immigration now ? how long is that average ?

  1. I love it there! I live in Toronto, and took a trip to Alberta last year, and it was BEAUTIFUL. BUT, I totally recommend VANCOUVER. I loved it there. Best of luck!

  2. for immigration info see the official website at http://www.cic.gc.ca/

Look under "immigration" and then the "skilled worker" section and there is a self test there to see if you qualify.

Yes tons of jobs in Calgary, Edmonton for electricians and all trades.  There is $16 billion dollars being invested there in oilsands and related supply chain.  Winters are cold (-25 to -40 C some days) and long Oct-Apr.

Vancouver has a great climate, very few days below freezing and the mountains and ocean is beautiful.  Outdoor paradise if your into sking, hiking, kayaking etc..   Right now our region (Vancouver)  is good for any trades as building like mad for 2010 winter olympics but maybe not so much after that?

  3. I live near Toronto, Canada.

I heard about the Albertans promoting jobs over in the UK, on the radio.

    It's funny.

Sure, there's lots of oil underground, and lots of high paying jobs to extract it, and support those extracting it, but the cost of living is also quite high there.  With such a high influx of people, there's a shortage of housing, and high demand for even grocery store and fast food clerks.

Don't forget to ask about the weather for your particular city, before buying your airline ticket.  You can get highs of +35 to +40 C in the summer, and lows of -35 to -40 C in the winter.

Try planning a week's visit, mid February, and mid July, to gauge the extremes.

Other parts of Canada have more constant weather - Vancouver is probably most like the UK in terms of temperature range and rainfall amounts.

  4. Yes.  Anywhere in Canada, especially the Alberta area and the GTA skilled trade workers are in high demand.

  5. Come to Alberta.  We desperately need skilled workers.  There are many sectors that are seeking skilled labour.

You should make sure that your electrician apprenticeship will be recognized in Canada and the province you want to move to.
