Well, I'm 13, 5'7", and I weigh around 153 pounds... well, that just bothers me that I'm overweight... so far i've atleast lost 5 pounds, but its annoying because i can loose 10, but if i don't pay COMPLETE attention, I easily gain back a few pounds. anyway, i've lost that much by riding my bike 6-15 miles atleast every other day. and a big problem for me is that i get bored SO easily. i'm usually by myself all day. anything that might keep me busy, besides eating? and don't say i'm too young to be worrying about this kind of stuff because it will just get harder later in life. maybe suggest some specific good foods or something.. oh, and do sit ups even help you loose weight, or do they only tone? well, thanks.

  1. First off, congrats on losing 5 pounds! Nowadays with fast food and cheap fats, that's quite an accomplishment. I have to say that no, you should not worry about your weight, HOWEVER...eating healthy is a good habit to get into no matter what age. Not knowing what type of area you're in, what parks are available, what afterschool programs are like, I can really only suggest simple things that while they seem very small, they can add up to alot.

The secret to weight loss, no matter what any programs tell you, is this: lower calorie intake, increase calorie output. It takes 3,500 calories to lose a pound of fat. So if you eat 500 fewer calories than you burn per day, you can lose a pound in a week--which is around a safe rate of weight loss. Remember, a typical human burns 2,000 calories a day, but don't forget how many more you're burning on the days you bike. (one of the links I've included is a calorie calculator) But remember too, you want to lose weight the healthy way. If you're eating a ton of fatty foods but still staying under your calorie limit, that's not the way to be. Eating less fat means you can eat more food and not feel like you're starving yourself.

Get in all your major food groups. Eat more fruits in the morning (so you have time throughout the day to burn off their sugars) and more veggies as the day progresses. Try to skim down on calories in your afternoon snacks and dinner--you're going to bed in a few hours, why would you need a ton of calories to sleep?

If you're awake, keep your metabolism going. Jumpstart it early in the morning with a glass of water as soon as you wake up. Stay hydrated throughout the day. Your body processes the water without taking in any calories, so what's the harm? Eating 5 smallers meals rather than 3 big ones also keeps your metabolic rate up there.

If you want a better way to stay interested in physical activity, I would recommend more than anything to do it with friends or family. You can encourage each other to keep going when you're tired, or talk while exercising. Since you bike several miles every other day, find different places to bike. Bike to a museum, or through a park you've never been. Find a biking club near you, and that will kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.

Hope some of those tips worked. And hey, I'm 24 years old, 5' 6", and 151--you're not that overweight :)

  2. There is this utterly amazing work out DVD called 30 Day Shred, the host is Jillian Michaels from the weight loss reality show The Biggest Loser. Its not expensive... about $10 on Amazon. It has raving reviews on Amazon and the inches seem to just melt off. On average, people seem to lose 1-2 pant sizes when working out to this DVD consistently for 30 days (but also watching their diet). However, this DVD is INTENSE. It packs an hours worth of time at the gym into a 20 minute segment that includes cardio, strength and abs. You get no breaks at all, you are literally worked until you feel like you're going to die, but it completely tones you up and helps you drop pounds. Here is the DVD to read some reviews http://www.amazon.com/Jillian-Michaels-3...

  3. All you need to do is to abolish suppers as they are the most fattening of all as you burn up very few calories in your sleep.

Smaller dinners would also help as dinner calories are more fattening than breakfast calories.  At breakfast time most of the day is ahead of you so you burn up the calories but at dinner time most of the day is behind you so you don't burn up the calories.
