Good luck charm - Hawaii?

My good friend is going to Iraq soon for over 1 yrs. He is in Military, sniper. I live in Hawaii and want to give him something to he can keep w/ him.

I would like to buy something from Hawaii but I'm not Hawaiian or have not live this island long enough to figure out.

Can someone help me?

I'm wishing his safe mission in there.

  1. I dont live in Hawaii but my family is hawaiian and most of them live on the Island and something we have here on the mainland is the Ikaika helmets. There are a couple diff. meanings to them but one is that they offer protection and also a symbol of the " warrior". As far as being able to keep it with him if you look them up you will see that might be difficult due to their size but there is also jewelry out there that would be easier to carry around.


  2. You can buy this in any local supermarket: alae salt. It's red because it has the earth of Hawaii mixed in. Some Hawaiians and local Japanese wear a bit on their person or sprinkle it around their home for protection. I used to wear some in a little pouch around my neck when I moved to a new place. I've also eaten a grain or two with a group in a ritual to bless new canoes.
