  1. wrestling, submission grappling, BJJ, really any type of grappling cause i've done alot of martial arts and grappling is always the most tiring and the hardest

  2. I would encourage a stand up style that would keep you moving.  I would recommend boxing or Muay thai.

  3. any martial art would be good for overweight people

  4. I would begin with Judo, and then progress into Jujitsu. The weight will come off.Good luck with your training.

  5. I started Taekwando  for the same reason as you; for something to motivate me. I was diagnosed as morbidly obese. After one year I lost about 65 pounds and it stayed off over the next year I lost an additional 45 pounds and they have stayed off also. I started at 50 years old. I Wish I had only started this stuff earlier in life before I got so badly out of shape. As my High School motto says "better late than never". I believe  most arts can be good it is a matter of finding a good school where there are instructors that care about the art and the student. Make sure the classes include a good warm up of about 20 min of anaerobic and aerobics.

  6. Well..... right now it would be a little intense and horrible if you did something like Wushu or Taekwondo, I won't suggest a martial art, because you shouldn't listen to any person on here about what to take because you are the only person that can determine that, I would, however, suggest that you go for a more linear style, such as Karate, Wing Tsun, Xingyi because they are less intense and balance focused than others. Also, do a bit of swimming, too, because you are overweight, your stamina is lowered, with some good cardiovascular exercise, your ability at Martial Arts would be improved. Not to mention that it's one of the best ways to lose weight. (if you intend to do so)

  7. well i weigh more than that and im not overweight, so how old are you?

  8. Karate, Jujutsu, Iaido...

Do what ever techniques you can.  Refuse any that might injure you.  There are very few but they are different for different types of people.

Large, small, old, stiff or people with injuries.  You get the picture.  Martial Arts is not for loosing weight.  It's for learning techniques. Being active and getting a little exercise is just a bonus not the reason to train in Martial Arts.  Want to loose weight...  Start a diet, ride a bike, walk, swim, join a gym but run away from any Martial Arts program that starts you out with 100 push ups and sit ups. You can do that at home.  Your paying them to teach you.  Spend your time at the Dojo training and learning.

I am 50 years old now and carry about 70 extra pounds and have been doing this for about 17 years.

  9. one popular form of martial arts is kickboxing. For your particular situation try what is known as aerobic or cardiovascular (cardio) kickboxing, which combines elements of boxing, martial arts, and aerobics to provide overall physical conditioning and toning. Unlike other types of kickboxing, cardio kickboxing does not involve physical contact between competitors - it's a cardiovascular workout that's done because of its many benefits to the body.  Which is something geared toward your needs.

Cardio kickboxing classes are usually comprised of warm-ups, which may include stretching and traditional exercises such as jumping jacks and push-ups, followed by a 30-minute kickboxing session that includes movements such as knee strikes, kicks, and punches. Some instructors may use equipment like punching bags or jump ropes.

    Remember to have fun

  10. wrestling?

  11. Well, i sujest you take tai chi, that is the perfect martial art from all kinds of people,

even though its movements are slow but when you fight you would make it fast.

well in learning tai chi you can balance your self like yoga. but practicing tai chi is more efective. Tai chi also have healing energy because it balance the yin and yang isside our body and flow it in our ownly nerves.

It is good and fun.. and right for you..

    Well Good Luck..

  12. Brasilian Jiu Jitsu.

    E

  13. TKD will help you lose weight. If you're not interested in losing weight then try Aikido it's pretty effortless and very effective. Also, if you gain a few more pounds and get to be 100 pounds overweight then most health insurance companies would pay for a gastric bypass.

  14. Ok so everyone is telling you their favorites, including Bujinkan Ninja, who supposedly has all of this training, yet still thinks that a yellow belt in TKD needs to register their hands as lethal weapons. lol:

The fact is that any martial art is going to benefit you with increased fitness, because at least it gets you off of the couch. The key is going to be finding one that you like and enjoy. You will want to start training at home, which will mean even less time on the couch. then you will probably want to start doing other excersise, to get in better shape for martial arts. It's a good cycle, however a lot will be up too you.

Here is what I suggest, rather then looking for a specific style:

    1) Search here for answers about how to find a good school, or go to www.bullshido.com, as they have an excellent list for what you want and what to avoid.

    2) Make a list of all of the schools in your area. Visit each and watch a minimum of 3 classes. Compare what you see to the list of what to look for.

    3) Pick the one that has the best instructor and training, that you cna afford, and interests you most.

I don't care if you winde up in karate, TKD, Judo, MMA Gym, BJJ, Muay Thai, as long as you pick the best school you can.

  15. i lost 60 lbs learning kung fu. most of it came out from going daily. i also recommend wrestling if youre in college or high school you will definitely lose weight. also i highly recommend MMA since it involves everything.

  16. I've been in martial arts for just over a decade now. Isshinryu Karate is a traditional, okinawan style that uses few jumps and spins, natural stances, kicks below the chest, muscle blocks, vertical punches, and natural body mechanics.

I would recommend this because it works for people of all sizes and ages, ability levels too. Hope this helps.
