We have a 50 gal. and love it!! We have 5 neon tetras, 5 tiger barbs, and 2 little yellow fish(they look like little gold fish with bigger tails) and gary the snail. Would love to add an oscar or something that looks cool. I love to sit and watch but I tend to get a little bored. Any suggestions?

  1. You might look at a school of black skirt tetras and/or Silver dollars.  Other interesting peaceful fish are upside-down catfish and scissor-tails.

Their mouths don't get big enough to threaten your neon's the way an Oscar would, and are not typically aggressive fish when kept in schools like an Angel fish pair or other cichlids.

Kuhli loaches are also favorites of mine for being interesting when they come out, but do tend to be shy and nocturnal.

Be aware the tiger barbs are known fin nippers if you pick out anything with long flowy/showy fins.

Good luck, and have fun with this!

  2. go down to your pet shop, see what you like, and then ask of its suitable.

we had an oscar in our classroom last year and we fed it grubs and little feeder fish(so dont put one in)

  3. NO!! on the Oscar - well unless you want to end up with only 1 big fat Oscar in your tank. An adult oscar will simply swallow those other fish whole.

As you have have neons you basically cant have any big fish, well nothing with a mouth thats bigger than a neon anyway.

Some bottom dewllers is a good option. A school of cory catfish or small loaches and a small pleco species like a bristlenose. They are bottom dwellers, but a quite active and playfull. Well maybe not the pleco, but it will help control algae.

I would get more neons if you like them, maybe another 10 or 20 in that size tank. Or a large school of some other small tetra. 5 Neons is hardly a school, especially in that size tank. 20 or so, and you start to get a good effect.

You can keep cichlids, but only small peacefull ones like Kribensis, Rams or Keyholes.

  4. You should add 5 cories, 2 bristlenose plecos, and 5 Pakistani (yo yo) Loaches or Zebra Loaches. These aren't the prettiest fish, but they will work hard to keep your aquarium tidy and they are fun to watch as they so diligently work.

  5. You could do a few angels or jewel cichlids, or the more common convicts. They all would be okay with these fish, save maybe the tetras. They may eat them, so if you wanted to keep them, you could do a set of dwarf cichlids, such as blue rams. Just do your research and see what works with your tank. Good luck!

  6. Well you better not get an oscar they would kill all of your fish!!! But maybe get some more neons and barbs since there are very few and love being in schools of at least ten. Maybe get 4-5 cories they are very active and keep a tank very clean

  7. An oscar would out compete most of the other fish, not mention once he gets big enough might eat them. I am not saying it isn't possible, I have an 10 inch oscar living with a few 1 1/2 inch bolivian rams. I wouldn't suggest it for the size of your tank, the oscar alone needs a 55 at least, and they make big messes, I have 2 filters for my tank size and I question if that's enough. I would suggest bolivian rams because I like them, and they could work so long as your other fish are larger. You could do apistos or maybe kribs as well.

  8. Oscar would kill them. Danios are very fun to watch especially since they don't just sit around all day. They move non-stop! Those are probably guppies you have. Watch out for fin nipping since barbs aren't very nice to fish like that. Get 2 or 3 corydoras and 1 pleco. Hope This helps!!
