Good music format for ipod?

Which formats can be successfully converted by itunes-for the ipod without there being any problems such as no audio in the clip? Or to which format can I convert it to directly transfer it to the pod without converting it through itunes also?

To my knowledge, the only format usable on iPods is MP4. Google "Video-to-iPod converter", there are lots of free - and paid - programs you can use for video conversion.
