  1. REAPER

  2. I use audacity for windows, and garageband for Mac OSX 10.5.

Audacity is a free program that is really great for everything you need it for, you can pan tracks left or right, reverse them, make them sound better, add effects, change volume and the whole shibang. I use audacity for my songs where I like to add John Frusciante-like reversed guitars and everything, but it is really great for anything you need it for. When you're going into Professional stuff, I recommend professional upgrades.

Download any version of Audacity here at: http://oldapps.com/Audacity.php

IF you work on a mac, Garageband comes free on most new macs and some older ones. It's basically the same thing, but a bit different, sometimes harder to use if you use Audacity.
