I'm moving to Edmonton to go to University of Alberta and I don't know a lot about the city.

Anyone know which neighbourhoods are good?

which should i stay clear from?

  1. Actually the area right around the University of Alberta is really nice. Sure, St. Albert is nice too but it is far too far away to commute to the U of A.

But when it comes down to it, the worst area is the Boyle street areal, all 10 square blocks of it. The rest of the city is good.

And while downtown gets really quiet after 10 PM, it does not suck.

  2. 1. Downtown I don't like because I think it's a hole, sorry to those that live there but lets face it Downtown Calgary looks way nicer.  I've seen things downtown that I just don't like so I just didn't want to live there.

    2. Around Campus and just south of campus in McKernan/Belgravia is close but more expensive so I didn't like it either.

    3. West Edmonton in around MedowLark, West Edmonton Mall Area is close enough to transport and is an OK area and I stayed there for a while well in School. Stay away from Stoney Plain RD area on the West end, its trouble for sure.

    4. South Side further South of Southgate Mall, Like Heritage, Yellow Bird. I stayed on the South Side for the last half of my schooling and to transport it's not bad. Too bad the Train from UofA to Heritage area will not be finished until april 2010.

So I'd say go with South Side or WestEnd but as always there are some crappy places to live in the way of the condition of the residences and there are some good ones. The hoods there are usually not all that bad for crime and such.

Oh yeah one more thing traffic always bottlenecks where Belgravia Road Meets 113St/114St at certian times in the mornings.  Which messes up your trafic if your comming from the west end or south side.  Just time things out alright and you're fine though.

  3. Edmonton doesnt really have a "no go" area although the downtown area on the north side of the river is pretty seedy.  If looking for family environs St Albert area is nice, west end (near the mall) is okay.  Looking for new houses theres a mega expansion of burbs going on in the south end of the city.  Entire new towns going up there.
