  1. The Double Helix by James Watson

  2. Firstly, it's autobiographIES...not 's.  Sorry, that really bugs me.

Find a person that you're really interested in and pick up their autobiography.  That's a good way to insure that you'll be interested throughout the book.  Iron and Silk by Mark Salzman was also very good.

  3. Nietzsche's "Ecce Homo," the antichrist's hilarious critique of his own life and times.

  4. Hi there

You might want to try a book I've just written. I'm looking for reviews/feedback on my first book which is about my mother and I wrote it as a tribute to her and so that future generations of my family will know about her. A full pdf copy can be downloaded from my website www.olga-a-daughters-tale.com

Olga - A Daughter's Tale is story of one woman’s inspirational life.   It follows the cruelty, revenge and jealousy she endured, and reflects her, moral courage, dignity, resilience and, in particular, love. This is the story of a remarkable woman, who because of circumstances, made a choice, which resulted in her losing contact with her beloved family in Jamaica, until nearly half a century later when her past caught up her. I wrote the book because I realized as my mother lay seriously ill in hospital in Brighton, England in 1994 that had she died so too would my chance of finding out about Mum's past, her family in Jamaica and, of particular importance to me, who my father was. All information she had resolutely refused to share with me. So, I decided to find out for myself.

I discovered my mother’s real name was Olga Browney, born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica - one of eleven children from a close-knit, coloured Catholic family. A kind, naïve and gentle girl, Olga arrived in London in 1939 to stay with a malevolent, alcoholic aunt and intending to remain for only six months. However, world events, personal tragedy and malicious intent all combined to prevent her from returning home to Kingston. It's a story which moves from Jamaica to England amidst World War II and is written in the form of diaries and letters by the three main people, Olga (my mother), Becky (my great grandmother) and Lucy (my great aunt).

You can download a pdf copy of the book from my website www.olga-a-daughters-tale.com

If you do read it, please email me and let me know what you think of it.

    Thanks

    Marie

  5. I love autobiographies.  My favorites have been Steve Martin's Born Standing Up and John Glenn's autobiography.  Whenever I find an autobiography I always try to get the audiobook.  Its great hearing the author read their own story.

  6. well i just finished reading a book called Please kill me a biography on how the punk rock n' roll movement began. its very good but very intense.

  7. Detour: My Bipolar Trip in 4-d by lizzie simon...it's a really interesting autobiography.

  8. Maybe I'm showing my liberal side here, but I'd have to say "The Audacity of Hope" by Barack Obama.  I read it before he decided to run for president, and I was a fan of his from the beginning.  The man's drive just wins you over.  It's worth a read even if you don't believe in his message.

  9. night by elie wiesel.

or band of brothers by stephen ambrose.

  10. Here are a few in no particular order.

Natasha: The Biography of Natalie Wood by Suzanne Finstad - A fun read which gives a lot of insight into the life of the actress Natalie Wood.

RICHARD NIXON IN THE ARENA by RICHARD NIXON  - Here he writes on many topics, from politics to leadership and so much more.

Wink: The Incredible Life and Epic Journey of Jimmy Winkfield by Ed Hotaling - Jimmy Winkfield was an African American jockey in the early 1900s. He life took him from the horse farms of Kentucky to the height of fame in Czarist Russia to broke at 60 working construction and then back to the top of horse racing. An amazing life.

Borderland: A Journey through the History of Ukraine by Anna Reid - Who knew Ukrainian history was so fun?

Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor E. Frankl - A psychologist survives n**i death camps and writes about it.

Panzer Leader by Heinz Guderian - On the flip side, Heinz Guderian designed the Blitzkrieg that rolled through Europe. A war classic.

  11. Falling Leaves: The Memoir of an Unwanted Chinese Daughter by Adeline Yen Mah. I read it in 7th grade and it was one of the most life changing books I've ever come across. It's very sad and sometimes hard to read (although it's extremely well written) but you'll come out of it with an incredible experience.

  12. Sarah Vowell's Take the Canolli is filled with good autobiographical essays.  Vowell is an excellent writer (also a commentator on NPR) who includes the right balance between seriousness and humor in her books.

Tennessee Williams' The Glass Menagerie is a great play to read.

Max Shulman's play, The Tender Trap, is also a good read.

  13. I had hardly read any autobiography's till recently when i got into them and since then i have read a few.

My favorite has been Russell Brand's Book Wook and it surprised me he wasn't the guy he seems on Tv and his drinks and drugs habits wasn't all there was to his life and it really made me think. I couldn't put the book down and would recommend it.
