Good on heels and good with the bag of clubs; US Women’s Open 2010

It was termed as the gentlemen’s game and all of a sudden. Women walking around, in their high stilettos, felt the need to take their heels off, and hit some scores on the golf course. Since that day it was a gentle women’s game as well. So today, in Country Club Oakmont there is a tournament going on, which started on 5th July and its going to continue till 11th July 2010. The timings are 6:30 am to 6:00 pm in the evening should you wish to attend.

Here is a little recap about the venue where the big event is going to be held; Oakmont Country Club is one of the top five clubs in America established in 1903. It is located in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. The club is majestic in its beauty with a beautiful crossing Allegheny River Valley. There are few scanty trees on the course. To add up to the difficulty level there are 200 bunkers and undulated greens, tilts and slopes. After all what is a competition without a challenge? It has 18 holes with par 71 and a yardage of 7255.The designer of the challenging course was Henry Fownes.

The history of the US Woman Open is very interesting. It dates back to 1953, but before that in 1786 for the very first time a golf club in Charleston, South Carolina was established although records show that the club which dates back to 1888 and is still in operations is the St. Andrew’s Golf Club in Yonkers, New York. Any ways, a lot of pondering was done over the issue. As a result is was decided that as women were a big part of the spectators, and were equally keen to play the game, so they too should be given an opportunity as well. Although there were few professional players at that time, that is why we do not see many names except for Helen Hicks, Opal Hill, Mrs. Charles S. Brown  and few more. November 1895 in a little time, a tournament by the name of Women’s Amateur was organized, at the Meadow Brook Club in Hempstead. Mrs. Charles S. Brown was the winner and her name was written in the history to be the first women to play and win a golf tournament.

In 1946 the first Women's Open was held under United States Golf Association. Patty Berg won the tournament of 36 holes in rounds of 72-73-145.The runner up was Betty Jameson. The year was 1965 when many other big events were happening in the history and for the very first time in the history the US Women’s Open was telecasted on TV. This one little step bought a huge change in the history of golf, people around the world got awareness that now women too were a part of the gentlemen’s game. Advertisements were being launched and huge sum of money was being showered on the players exclusively on the winners.

This is all for the history, now the question arises what is happening in the current scenario.US Women’s open is being held in Oakmont Country Club. 152 players all around the world will compete in it along with the past champions like Eun-Hee Ji 2009, Inbee Park 2008, Cristie Kerr 2007, Meg Mallon2004, Juli Inkster 2002 and Karrie Webb 2001.The only three champions that are missing in this list are Hilary Lunke 2003, Annika Sorenstam 2005, and Birdie Kim 2006.It would have been way too thrilling if these three missing divas would have shown up as well. After all more variety more fun.

Just wait for the results and see who the new beauty with brains is? Who will ride home with the title of US Women’s Open 2010, and gets her name written in the magnificent history of golf .So way to go ladies; golf lovers are waiting for you to backswing and show us your moves.
