Good place to vacation in winter, somewhere warm?

I've been to clearwater and it is very nice! Maybe I'll look up that distance, last time I flew

We like the panhandle region of Florida, in particular the Destin and San Destin areas.  I'm not sure, however, if it would be warm enough to swim there during January...It does have beautiful beaches.  I think they are among the prettiest in the world.  The water is green, the color of jade, and the sand is white.  There are lots of places geared toward children-- amusement parks, put-put golf, and lots of kid-friendly places to eat out.  But if swimming is important, you'll probably have to go further south, or wait until about March.  Why not fly,though?  With the current cost of gasoline, it would probably be cheaper, especially if you could book pretty far in advance.  Just a thought.  It's warm enough to swim in Miami or Ft. Lauderdale, and certainly Key West during January.

Clearwater is beautiful.  You might also think about Anna Maria Island, Longboat Key or Siesta Key.

Check out Dominican Republic. I took my kids there the last couple of years and they had a blast. Stay away from Porto Plata ( ocean water not too clear ) Punta Cana is great ( blue blue water ) Very cheap all inclusive holidays, trip will probably cost less than driving somewhere in the states. No worries about shots and you do not need a passport..

I had to chuckle when i read this. We live in Southern Wisconsin and are in the same boat. We also have three kids and want to be able to drive. This is what we decided to do.promise not to laugh? We decided we are going to The Mall Of America near Minneapolis,Mn. Its only a 5 hour drive. We are staying at the Water Park of America Hotel.This way no matter what the weather we will still have a blast. The hotel has water slides,raft slides,pools and even a spa for myself. While there we are going to Underwater Adventures which is an aquarium that holds sea turtles,octopuses,eels and sharks. We are also going to the new Nickelodeon Universe that just opened. Its a huge indoor them park in the center of the mall.the kids can meet their favorite Nick characters.(sponge bob,dora,backyardagains,jimmy newtron), The mall also has Lego Land. Your kids could play with legos for hours. One other thing we are doing is the Como Park Zoo and Conservatory. Its open year round.  Its just a suggestion. Its kind of hard not living near a warm beach.
