  1. Hi. Great question. It can be more than a little intimidating admitting that you have developed a desire to learn to ice skate, when you might feel that many of your friends learned how when they were much younger, but fear not: you are one of many who are stepping up and voicing your interest, and there are a couple of ways you can go.

Canada is very fortunate in that it has so many great skating clubs, particularly in the GTA...it's hard to drive more than ten minutes in any direction without coming upon the home facility of another club, many of which are running programs aimed at your age and interest level demographic. Me, I teach a learn-to-skate program aimed at teens and adults once a week at a West-end club, but you should really look at the clubs in your area of the city. To get a look at the clubs in your region you should visit the website for the Skate Canada - Central Ontario head office located in Concord. There are listings of websites for all of the Skate Canada clubs in your region, as well as listings of programs, and in many cases, individual coach listings.

If after you have checked out the club scene you wish to pursue skating on a more recreational, informal level, community activity course calendars like the Mississauga Active handbook lists some city-run classes which might be more to your liking.

Now, the low-price issue. The concept of what constitutes "low price" is very subjective. Again, Canada is very lucky indeed that the cost of coaching here does not even approach the costs which I have seen offered in lesson costs south of the border. Suffice it to say that it is not uncommon in the United States for a rather low level coach to be making an hourly rate that is on a par with coaching rates charged in Canada by some of our finest coaches. If I had a choice, I'd spend my skating bucks in Canada. I think that once you get going in the sport you'll realize that Canadians have a pretty good thing here.
