Question:

Good quote about free will?

I need a good quote that has to do with the importance of free will.

It can not be out of the book "East of Eden" so please exclude that from your quotes. And I need it to be from someone with good credentials (a well known philosopher or a poet) so please dont make up any because I will not choose your answer. Also exclude the site "Thinkexist.com" because I have already looked through their free will quotes.

Please help.

Thank you!

"Free will and determinism are like a game of cards. The hand that is dealt you is determinism. The way you play your hand is free will." Cousins, Norman

"Man was predestined to have free will." Luyah, Hal

"God is not willing to do everything, and thus take away our free will and that share of glory which belongs to us." from The Prince by Machiavelli

  2. “Life is like a game of cards. The hand you are dealt is determinism; the way you play it is free will.”

Jawaharlal Nehru quotes (Indian Prime Minister. 1889-1964)

(I think Nehru, not Norman Cousins, is the original source for this quote.  Furthermore, Nehru has better credentials than Cousins.)

  3. Men make their own history, but not just as they choose, not under circumstances they themselves have chosen, but under circumstances inherited, handed down, given by the past.
