Question:

Good reasons for school?

I'm 12, i've been home-schooled for about six or seven years and now I think I might like to go to school with all my friends.

I have about 30, 40 friends and only one of them is home-schooled, so it wouldn't be like i'm the new kid and I don't know anybody. I'm pretty smart and apparently i'm a social butterfly that would be super-popular in school, according to my cousins and most of my friends.

My mom wouldn't like it, she hates school, but are there any good reason that I should go? We supposedly have great schools here in Swarthmore, and the High School has an amazing curriculum. Could you give me at least 5 reasons to go? Thanks

  1. Well you are 12 and you have basically been thru all your elementry grades so I think its time your mom lets you go to public school.  You obviously need to interact with other kids, if the curriculum is great then that is definately a plus.  Why is your mother against public school.  Its morals, you have already had them installed in you and they are part of who you are, I believe that you should attend a public high school.  It will not affect your personality negatively because your character is usaually formed by the time you are 14 and yes that is true, you already have you main belief fondations by this point.

  2. No.

I just started homeschooling this year and I've never been happier.

You only have to be with people you like.

You may know 40 nice people, but the other 100 in your chool will hate you. For no reason.

    Trust me.

  3. 1.  The surroundings- you will meet new people and have a fun time hanging out with them

    2.  The learning-  If it is a really good school, they will have a great academic program that will teach you much more than home schooling.  Its really great.

    3.  Your elective-  You will probably want to be something when your older, like a doctor or a swimmer...etc.  So highschools, you can take an extra class for fun stuff like that for what you want to do when your older.

    4.  The P.e.-  You get to go outside and chill with friends and run and play workout games.  It is great to run and loose weight.  Like If it wern't for Pe... I would be a fat couch potato..lol

    5.  The teachers-  Your mom/dad must be great at teaching you, but these teachers have a degree in it and are mostly the nicest and sweetest people you will ever meet.  They help you with your problems and questions.  YOu will love school!!!

    HOpe this helps!!

  4. As a homeschooling parent (former elementary teacher) who absolutely refuses to have her kids in a jr. high, no, I can't think of any good reason for you to go, especially not 5 of them. My husband, a jr. high teacher, also can't think of a good reason for you to go.

Going to school at that age will likely mean that you end up losing a part of yourself. What do I mean by that? It's a vulnerable age and being all lumped together for long periods of times tends to make kids that age more peer-dependent--their focus is being like their peers and spending lots of time with their peers and they don't really think about the important things in life. You end up spending lots of your time make sure you're doing like everybody else or making sure you're accepted by everybody else instead of just being yourself. Of course, if most of your friends are public school friends, you may have already fallen into this trap.

You also end up having to sit through classes, in desks, at a pace dictated by the teacher. You can expect at your age to have at least an hour of homework every night. You can also expect to have little time to spend on things you really enjoy doing. When you are in school, you are supposed to treat school like your full-time job with overtime--overtime (homework) you MUST do.

I also think it's a really bad idea to go to school because you think you'd be super popular. Getting into that whole trap and the cliques and all that just isn't worth it. It's superficial stuff and would trap you into being a superficial person.

  5. Well it sounds like you answered the question for yourself. You've got heaps of friends,  You would be popular, It's also a great learning curb to associate in a school surrounding, Also it's not your Mum's life it's yours, just because she didn't like school doesn't mean you will be the same. She can't take that away from you. I think you should have the right to figure out if you like it or not for yourself. Good luck.

  6. At 12 maybe

They might offer some shops and lab courses.

    I'd say continue homeschool

    How smart are you

    12

    Do you know algebra

    Compuuters

Can you name the capitals of at least 30 US states

To be frank MOST 12 year olds in BRICK school CAN'T DO those things

    How do you stack up

Have you taken a Stanford of Minneapolis Multiplastic Test

    How did you score

At 13 school is about back packs, going from one class to another in 5 minutes, doing work on demand, having pens, pencils and paper, having the right color notebooks, eating BAD caffeteria food, raise you hand to go pee pee and getting a hall pass, smoking in the girls room,  in some schools it's metal detectors going into school

You have to EVALUATE where you ARE right now

Going to school at 16 or 17 might give you an advantage IF they have Chem Labs and Biology Labs and Physic Labs and School Radio stations and School Newspapers with presses.

THEN it might be an ADVANTAGE

    Where are you now

    Do you know!

    This is an important point

1 out of 10 15 year olds get PREGANT in BRICK school because they kiss too much and let boys, touch them too much

    Is that what you want

You want to start smoking joints

    Doing crack

Do you want to be a Goth, a Preppie, a Cheerleader

    13 STARTS the cliques

But MOST important is HOW are you fairing now

    Can you do algebra

    Can you write an essay

    Do you know World History

IF YOU DO you are BETTER than 40% of the kids in BRICK SCHOOL

Your PARENTS have to EVENTUALLY let you go into the real world, if they don't then maybe you need brick school

In a brick school the officials yell at everyone

Boys try to put their hands into your pants and up your blouse

People try to get you to drink and smoke dope

Do you really want that LIFE

Do you really want to TRAVEL to that school STAY there ALL day long, go from class to class and then TRAVEL home.

There HAS to be a REAL reason

IF you are NOT learning at home, then THAT is a reason

IF you don't have access to equipment and resources and the SCHOOLS DO HAVE IT then THAT is a reason

To have a boy kiss you and try to put his hands up your blouse is NOT a very good reason

Getting into Drama or Choir or School Newspaper IS a GOOD reason

Getting knocked up is NOT a good reason

YOU have to decide, make the choices, live with it and fend off the ILL winds

That isn't required at HOMe most of the time

Home you can knap if you're tired.  Watch PBS or TV when you're bored.  Work at your own pace.

SCHOOL is a potential RESORUCe but if their are NO resoruces then what is the difference!

You're 12, I wouldn't expect them to let you go to the mall until you are at least 14, not alone at least

The world has a lot of hazzards, including teachers.  Not all, but some.

If Middle school, like mine, offer Electronics, Plastics, Metal and other SHOPS then it CAN be a good thing to a degree

If you system doesn't then home is more condusive.

You have to make the choice

The WORLD is out to get you

YOU have to be ready for it

There are TOOLS out there, sometimes, not always, and YOU have to put them to good use.

12 is a little too young to make all the right choices

BUT we HAVE to get back to WHERE YOU ARE NOW

If YOU are not up to snuff then School might be better.

But it's a different world.  A rough world.

And it's NOT a real world

  7. Social reasons and wanting to be popular are the wrong reason to go to school. Junior High is also the wrong time to start. At least wait until High School when the kids are not so vicious.

  8. -You can learn new things

-you can make more friends and meet all sorts of new and interesting people

-School also has a wide range of activities that you could try out and it can be fun

  9. reasons for school:

    -more friends

    -social experience

-experience the great curriculum you mentioned....

    -prom night

    -cute boys...

  10. I'm sorry to break this to you, but there are no good reasons to go to a regular high school. There are many good reasons, however, to be homeschooled. 1) you have one-on-one education without distractions from other kids, 2) you aren't influenced so much by other kids, 3) you have less peer pressure, 4) studies have shown that homeschoolers have higher SAT and standardized test scores than those attending public and private schools, 5) homeschool curriculums are higher academically than those used by public schools- I know this because I've gone to public school for 6 years, before being homeschooled, and 6) homeschoolers learn about real life situations before many kids and even adults do.

Be thankful that your parents care enough to homeschool you and care about giving you a great education!
