For my birthday I need to know of good restaurants south of 40th street in NYC. Ideally no chain restaurants; something classy but not too expensive since we're only teens.

Thanks!

  3. Try Penelope's, which is off Lexington at about 30th Street.  It's nice but not formal.  The food is interesting and quite good.  Be aware that they don't take credit cards.  It's popular with folks in their 20s and 30s, but teens can fit in too.  Not many tourists know about it.

  4. I love JOE'S SHANGHAI in Chinatown, on Pell Street.

Keep in mind, this is cafeteria style. It is very common to share your table with another party.

Try the soup dumplings with pork, they are out of this world.  Listed on the menu as Xiao Long Bao.

If you have a party of more than 10 people, you can reserve a table. Otherwise, be prepared for a long wait during peak hours. There's a reason it's hard to get in--the food is fantastic!

  5. Katz's Deli, E. Houston St.
