in the beginning are you supposed play with or without a pick?

Well, there are many ways to play guitar.  You can used a pick or you can finger pick.  The cool thing about finger picking is that you can use all of your fingers (although, only flamenco guitarists use their pinky).  Do what you like best, or do both.  You might want to use a pick for one song, and your fingers for another depending on the kind of tone you are looking for.  There are no rules about what you are supposed to do or not to do as far as rock music goes.

Of course ur supposed 2 play w/ a pick. beginners dont have enough finger strength. I always play w/ a pick

I use both finger picking AND a Pick... it all depends on the sound I want to get as to what I am doing at the time.

The reason I refuse to play Electric guitars is, I can't get the voicing from them I can from a Classical or Acoustic guitar... and part of showing my range with a guitar is by mixing up picking with finger picking so I can get different shades and variations within the same song.
