  4. I would recommend taking a trip to your local running store (yes, running store) and have them do an analysis of your feet.  They will be able to best determine from the results of that -- there are so many types of running shoes out there, and shoes really can make a big difference during your workouts and races.  Not necessarily time wise, but more in terms of your overall comfort.

  5. it really depends what feels more comfortable for your feet. most RUNNING stores (not like Sports Authority or Big 5, but RoadRunner, Snail's Pace, etc) have professional workers who will HELP you decide what shoes to get. they wont' necessarily CHOOSE one for you, but will help you because they dont know how your feet feels. however, you can go to sports authory or big 5 or sports chalet to get running shoes at a cheaper price.

personally, i liked asics the best becasue they have lots of black things in the heel (since i tend to wear the heel easily). here are some tips of buying shoes

    Sizing Tips  (back to top)

Here are some helpful tips to make sure you find the right shoe that fits you properly.

Copied & pasted from runasnailspace.com for your convenience & summarized:

"- There's no standardization in shoe sizing, even within the same brand.

    - measure both feet. Most people find 1ft longer than the other. fit the larger foot.

    -  Your foot swells and expands as you run. if there isn't enough toe space, you'll get blisters or black toenails

    - Have 1 finger's width from your longest toe and the end of the shoe.

    - Running shoes tend to run small. Running shoes will be larger than casual shoes

-It is OK for your foot to move around in the shoe a little.

What type of runner are you?

    - overpronator- outside edge of your heel hits the ground first and your foot continues foward and come toward the arch and push off with your. Most ppl are overpronatros. Normally, ppl w/ flat feet/low arches overpronate. If you wear out your heel easily (like me) then you're an overpronator.

    - Supinator (underpronator)- Your heel hits the ground first, but instead of coming toward your arch, you keep going on teh outside of your foot and you push off using your 4th and 5th toes. Only 1% of runners are supinators.

    - normal (neutral)- heel hits first and you roll toward the center of your foot.

What type of shoe should I purchase?

    Neutral shoes

    For neutral & supinators.

    Slight stability shoes-

For overpronators who have a slight inward roll with their foot strike. The EVA helps stablize the overpronating in the middle of your shoe. So if you try to twist it, it should be semi-stiff.

    Moderate stability shoes-

When overpronaters run inward a LOT. These shoes have more EVA

    Motion control shoes-

For Pronators who severely run inward. It has the highest amount of stablitiy These are the heaviest (by couple ounces) of all shoes.

THere are two shoe types. People who run around 30-50 miles a week. & People who run HIGH mileage. High-mileage shoes tend to be more expensive. Good running shoes range from $65-$120

Shoes normally last 300-500 miles including walking around in them. Be sure to keep a mileage log to keep track how many miles you ran, or else you might get injured.

There are many different brands such as asics, nike, new balance, mizuno, saucony

I hope you lovee cross country as I do!

Edit: Here's examples of asics shoess! http://www.asicsamerica.com/products/cat...

  6. New balance makes good trail shoes, so do salomon, inov8, vasque and many others.  Try here,  http://www.trailrunnermag.com/article.ph...
